Chapter 18 Harlan

As soon as they returned to the hotel room, Harlan sensed a change in Jayden’s demeanor. Harlan inched closer to him so he could touch him, but Jayden walked away, pulled the drapes apart, and stared out the window. Jayden had said all the right words to him, but did he mean them? It was harder to fake it physically in bed and he didn’t think he was. Was he deliberately avoiding his touch when he shied away from him to look out the window? It was an uncomfortable move on his part. Something had changed after he had said he was tired and wanted to leave the club. Jayden said he loved to dance, so why had he wanted to leave so early? In any event, returning to the hotel room earlier was a bad omen for their first weekend date.

Harlan believed a city outing would happen every weekend and keep Jayden happy. Now, Harlan wasn’t so sure these trips to the cities would keep Jayden happy and balanced. Something had changed and he was blind to what it could be.

“Jade, tell me if I said something to hurt you.”

He turned around and looked at him with faraway eyes. “I’m tired. Would you mind if I go to sleep?”

“Alone?” Harlan felt his heart drop to the floor like a heavy stone falling from a two-story building.

“No. I want you with me.” Slowly, he removed his clothes, stopped off in the bathroom, then made his way to the bed. With the covers pulled up, he watched Harlan undress and smiled when he moved into bed beside him.

“I’ll just hold you. You need to sleep,” Harlan said.

“Thanks for understanding. I don’t usually do this. I’m just beat.”

Harlan spooned Jayden’s body. “I’m happy you’re here with me.”

“Me too.”

Harlan had fallen asleep for the night, but when he woke up, Jayden wasn’t in bed beside him. He jumped out of bed and shouted, “Jade! Where are you? Jade!”

He checked all the rooms in the suite. His heart skipped a beat and he quickly dressed. He pounded on the adjoining door to Lucas’ and Gleb’s room.

“Hey, open up!” Harlan shouted.

The door opened with both of them dressed in jeans and T-shirts. Their clothes were wrinkled and most likely they had slept in them.

“What’s up?” Lucas asked.

“Jayden is missing.”

“Did he go downstairs to get coffee?” Gleb asked.

“I don’t know where he is. He’s gone. Find him now.” Harlan heard the panic in his voice. He feared the worst. Had he been taken like his family?

“Yes, sir, we’re on it,” Lucas said.

His stomach squeezed into tight coils. Where had he gone? He had been acting strangely last night. He should have had guards stationed at the door twenty-four-seven. Instead, he’d thought Jayden was safe with him, but he was able to leave without anyone detecting it. He had no idea where he’d go. He had left his suitcase behind. When Harlan opened it, the only things gone were his jeans and the green academy shirt he had said he loved.
